Ascended Heroes ETB vs Booster Bundle: Which to Buy in Australia

Ascended Heroes ETB vs Booster Bundle: Which to Buy in Australia

Ascended Heroes ETB vs Booster Bundle: Which One Should Australians Actually Buy?

Every week someone messages us the same question. Two products, one set, very different prices. Which one gives you the better shot at the Mega Gengar?

Short answer: it depends entirely on whether you're opening or holding. Long answer below, with actual numbers.

First, why this set still matters in late 2026

Ascended Heroes landed on 30 January 2026 and it did not behave like a normal special set. At 295 cards it's the largest Pokémon TCG set ever printed, with a huge Mega Evolution ex roster and an unusually dense run of Special Illustration Rares — including the Mega Gengar ex SIR, one of the most valuable singles in the entire Mega Evolution block.

It also introduced a genuinely new rarity. There are seven Mega Attack Rare cards in the set, all full-card alternate arts of Mega Evolution Pokémon ex with their attacks printed across the artwork in katakana.

And there's the thing collectors can't stop talking about: a vanishingly small number of packs are God Packs, containing three Mega Attack Rares and seven Special Illustration Rares instead of the normal rarity spread. TCGplayer's authentication centre opened over 2,000 packs and found none.

That's the set. Now the products.

The pull rates, honestly

Following the ETB release on 20 February 2026, the TCGplayer Authentication Center opened more than 2,000 booster packs, and the results were better than most people expected.

  • A Mega Hyper Rare appears roughly once every 540 packs — more than double the rate of Mega Evolution and Phantasmal Flames, which sat at about 1 in 1,260.
  • Around 8% of packs contain an Ultra Rare in the rare slot.
  • Completing one copy of every Ultra Rare takes an average of 946 packs.

Read that last number carefully. 946 packs. That's not a realistic goal for any single buyer, and it reframes the whole ETB-versus-bundle question. You are not buying either product to complete the set. You're buying for the experience, for a shot at a specific chase, or to hold sealed.

There is one important caveat. Because Ascended Heroes is the largest English set ever, your odds of finding any specific card are much lower — though opening packs is generally more fun and less frustrating than it was in sets like Prismatic Evolutions.

The chase cards you're actually hunting

Based on current market tracking:

  • Mega Gengar ex SIR (#284) — the undisputed top of the set
  • Pikachu ex SIR (#276 and #277) — two separate cards, both strong
  • Mega Charizard Y ex (#294)
  • Mega Dragonite ex (#290 and #295)
  • Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex (#281)

What gives this set its personality isn't just the Mega forms — it's the character-owned Pokémon. Team Rocket's Mewtwo, N's Zoroark, Lillie's Clefairy, Steven's Metagross. Cards that mean something before you even check a price.

ETB vs Booster Bundle: the actual comparison

Ascended Heroes Elite Trainer Box

The ETB carries 9 packs plus a full-art promo card and the usual accessory set. The accessories are the underrated part: sleeves, dice, a condition marker and the storage box itself, which quietly saves you $40 of separate purchases if you're building a deck.

This is also the sealed unit the market treats as the anchor. Ascended Heroes released through Elite Trainer Boxes, booster bundles and collection boxes rather than a standard booster box — so the ETB is the anchor sealed unit for the set.

Buy the ETB if: you want the accessories, you're building an Ascended Heroes deck, or you're buying to hold sealed long-term. The ETB is the unit collectors recognise and resell.

Ascended Heroes Booster Bundle

Six packs, no accessories, lower entry price. Pure opening.

Buy the Bundle if: you want to rip, you already have sleeves and dice, or you want to test your luck on the set without committing to the larger box.

The straight answer: if you're opening for fun, the Bundle gives you a better cost-per-pack. If you're holding sealed or you need the accessories, the ETB is the one that holds its shape in the market.

What's coming, and how it affects this decision

30th Celebration (released 16 September 2026). The first Pokémon TCG set to launch in every region on the same day, removing the usual import market entirely. Historically, anniversary sets like Celebrations in 2021 had enormous print runs and heavy demand, so day-one pricing behaved very differently from a normal expansion.

Mega Evolution: Delta Reign (6 November 2026). Headlined by Mega Rayquaza ex and taking inspiration from the Delta Episode, this is the final main expansion of the Mega Evolution era. A League Battle Deck featuring Mega Greninja ex follows on 11 November.

Here's the practical read. Ascended Heroes sits in the middle of a closing era. Once Delta Reign lands and the Mega Evolution block is complete, retail supply of the earlier sets stops being replenished. Sealed product from special sets like this has historically appreciated 30–80% within 6–12 months as supply dries up.

We're not going to tell you cards are an investment. But if you were already planning to buy Ascended Heroes, buying it before the era closes is the less expensive version of that decision.

FAQ

How many packs are in the Ascended Heroes Elite Trainer Box?
Nine booster packs, plus a full-art promo card and the standard accessory set.

What's the rarest card in Ascended Heroes?
The Mega Hyper Rares are the rarest tier, appearing on average once every 540 packs. By value, the Mega Gengar ex Special Illustration Rare (#284) leads the set.

Is there a proper Ascended Heroes booster box?
No. The set released through Elite Trainer Boxes, booster bundles and collection boxes rather than a standard booster box. That's why the ETB carries the weight it does.

Should I buy Ascended Heroes or wait for Delta Reign?
Different sets, different reasons. Delta Reign is the November release and the era closer. Ascended Heroes is the biggest set in the game's history and is already past its peak supply. Most collectors we talk to are doing both.

Do you ship Ascended Heroes across Australia?
Yes. Both products are held in Australian stock and dispatch in 1–2 business days, in AUD with GST included.
